These courses are offered, without cost, to apparel industry employees and managers. They are made possible by grants from New York State, NYC Department of Small Business Services, and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Pattern Making Series:

Pattern Making II (E.S) Bilingual

Location: F.I.T. building "C" 27 St. Room TBA

Dates: Tue & Thu , Sat

Instructor: Julia Huaman

Prerequisite: Patternmaking I

Course Description: This course allows the student to proceed from the study and application of the basic principles of patternmaking to a more comprehensive view of design within flat pattern method.  Students will learn basic sleeve and skirt slopers, made from measurements taken on dress form or using one's own measurements. This course also explores a variety of sleeves and skirts (including asymmetrical designs ).

 Patterns are proven in muslin. This class is the second of three classes offered in sequential order. Class is limited to 20 students for a total of 16 sessions. 

 

Draping for apparel design series

(E.S Bilingual):

Prerequisite: Patternmaking and sewing skills

Course Description: This course consists of four sequential levels.

Students will be able to develop professionally draped garments from the basic to more intricate designs. Students will explore new techniques using Draping and flat Pattern  in order to translate an idea or concept into an actual garment faster with greater accuracy and efficiency. Students will create one complete stylized draping as a culminating project

Draping I

Introduction of the basic silhouettes of bodices, skirts, collars and sleeves utilizing various tools, equipment and materials. Woven and Knit fabric for draping. This class is the first of four classes offered in sequential order. Class is limited to 20 students for a total of 16 sessions. 

 

Manual Marking and Sample Cutting

Location: F.I.T. building "C" 27 St Room C702             

Dates: Tue , Thu , Sat

Instructor: Ana V. Perez

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of garments and sewing; basic pattern

making preferred.

Course Description: This class teaches an understanding of

fabric nap and direction, garment symmetry and nap, Skills taught include, grain recognition, and proper marker preparation.  Students practice on miniature and full size patterns and markers.  Sample cutting skills taught include fabric symmetry and nap, open and folded fabric layout, nap and grain, pattern layout techniques, shears handling, Students will practice cutting on a variety of specialty and basic fabrics and garment types.  This class is limited to 20 students for 20 sessions.

Sample Hand I (E.S) Bilingual

Instructor: Ana V. Perez

Prerequisite: Must have knowledge of garments and sewing skills.  Sewing skills of each student will be assessed to determine eligibility for enrolling in this class.

Course Description: This course equips experienced sewers with full garment construction and additional skills in making lined garments.  Each student will make an unlined pant, a lined skirt and a lined vest.  This class is the first of two classes offered in sequential order.  Class is limited to 20 students for 16 sessions.
